The 3:30 PM Adult Open Art Studio sessions will now focus on Nature Journaling!
As winter melts away and the earliest signs of spring begin to appear, this adult workshop invites participants to slow down and explore nature journaling as a mindfulness practice.
Nature journaling is a gentle way to record what we notice when we go for a walk, spend time outdoors, or simply pause to observe the changing season. Through sketching, writing, watercolor, color notes, and simple observation-based exercises, participants will create personal journal pages inspired by the natural world.
Inspired by The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady and the drawing exercises of Betty Edwards, this class encourages careful looking, quiet reflection, and a gentle connection between art and mindfulness.
There is no right or wrong way to do nature journaling. It is not about perfection. It is about noticing. A page might include a quick sketch, a few written observations, a color study, a watercolor wash, or a reflection about what caught your attention that day. Nature journaling is a mindfulness activity that helps us slow down, pay attention, and connect with the nature that is in all of us.
Participants are welcome to bring their own drawing journal or sketchbook — perhaps one tucked away on a bookshelf, just waiting to be opened. If you do not have your own materials, supplies will also be available at the studio for a small additional fee, depending on your choices. Options may include sketchbooks, Micron pens, permanent markers, pencils, watercolor, and other drawing materials.
Sessions may include contour drawing, negative space, focused observation, and journaling prompts designed to help participants notice more deeply and trust what they see.
In addition to studio time, this offering may also include occasional field trips to local parks, nature preserves, or conservation areas for outdoor observation and journaling.
No advanced drawing experience is needed. This is a welcoming class for adults who would like to slow down, pay attention, and connect with spring through art.
Let’s start where you are.
